Creating Healthier
Ways of Relating

At Castillo Psychotherapy & Counseling, we provide counseling to people who share a relational connection, romantic, intimate, or otherwise. This work is facilitated by a licensed therapist trained to help partners navigate challenges, strengthen communication, and create healthier patterns of interaction.

When the partners are legally married, this service may also be referred to as marital therapy, though the core principles remain the same.

Building More Fulfilling Connections

The focus of relationship therapy is to reduce relational stress and promote overall well-being for everyone involved. Sessions can address concerns impacting a single partner, shared challenges between partners, or the broader dynamics influencing the relationship.

Through this process, people can enhance communication, deepen emotional intimacy, and build more intentional, fulfilling connections.

When is therapy helpful?

Choosing to begin relationship therapy can feel overwhelming, yet reaching out for support is a meaningful and courageous step toward strengthening connection and restoring balance.

A therapist’s role is to guide the people involved through the process in a way that feels grounding, collaborative, and supportive. Relationship therapy can be helpful when navigating a variety of challenges, including:

Recurring conflict patterns:

Conflict is a normal part of any relationship, but it can become stressful when the same disagreements keep repeating without resolution.

Therapy helps people identify these patterns, understand the underlying dynamics, establish healthy boundaries, and develop more constructive ways to navigate disagreements and communicate effectively.

Stress connected to sexual intimacy:

Using a sex-positive and shame-free approach, therapy can help partners explore emotional connection, rebuild trust, and understand areas of intimacy that may need nurturing.

Increased emotional closeness often supports improved sexual intimacy as well.

Life stressors:

Challenges related to parenting, work, health, or other relationships can create strain.

Therapy offers a space to strengthen mutual support and navigate stressors as a team.

Insecure attachment patterns:

Partners may experience uncertainty, withdrawal, or heightened sensitivity within the relationship.

Therapy can help increase emotional safety and create more secure, responsive patterns of connection.

What to Expect in the First Session

Expect a structured, introductory session where the therapist gets to know you both as individuals and as a couple, focusing on your relationship history, current challenges (communication, intimacy, conflict), individual backgrounds, and goals for therapy, all within a safe, confidential space.

It's a chance to feel heard, understand differing perspectives, and set the foundation for future work, not to solve everything at once.
